So... I've been having driveability issues with the Celica running on the HKS SSQV VTA'd.  Every time I'm just cruising or have the gas at 1/4th throttle, my car will stutter... horribly!  This is when I'm getting on the gas or even when letting off.

After looking into it a bit more it turns out that a number of other All trac guys running a stockish setup has been having this issue as well w/ the HKS SSQV even the guys who have the HKS Recirculated.  People have just learned to live with it and drive in a manner to avoid this "Bucking" issue as have I.  Well I decided NO MORE!

The Issue:
The "Flapper" AFM..., which I'm sure restricts airflow and is a definite POS, and the HKS SSQV BOV doesn't mix well.  The HKS spring is too stiff (As well as many other BOV's) and will only open under certain pressure.  The AFM is still open this entire time while cruising and bringing in more air than the partially opened throttle body can take.  Instead of the HKS releasing this excess air, it doesn't even open up, and causes pressure back on the turbo which makes it buck.

The Solutions:
1)  Get a bypass valve that mainly stays open when not under boost
2)  Get an AEM EMS and get rid of the flapper.

I've chosen to go the cheaper route and just get a bypass valve setup.  In comes the Synapse Synchronic Blow Off Valve.
- This BOV seems to act very much like a Bypass Valve.  The BOV constantly stays open (So I have to recirculate my BOV now) however completely closes upon boost and moderates according to how much boost I'm pushing.
- Has worked for several stockish All Trac owners and hoping it'll work for me.
- Best part is, it has an HKS adapter so that it will clip directly onto my HKS flange I have welded on!

I've already sold my HKS SSQV and purchased a Synchronic.

Currently:  I have my intake out and have tapped a 1 inch barb for recirculation.  Now just time to reinstall and T-off some vacuum lines.

Evos have the same problem with the HKS bov also, that's why no evos uses it.  A lot of evo drivers also turned to the synchronic bov and I have not heard of any issues with it.  Good choice.

Have you guys thought about running speed density? I had the issue when I was running mass air sensor but not as bad. The guy that tuned my car told me and set up the car for speed density and it fixed the problem.

I run a HKS and had the same problem.  but I fixed my issue with my SAFC2, with the proper settings you can eliminate that bog.

Well.  I got it in and drove it this Sunday.  I had one bucking incident when first driving the car around.  But that was the only time through the rest of the day!  Only downfall is that I don't have the usual loud ass BOV sound when shifting.  Instead I here a small laser sound.

Speed Density tuning huh?  Some kind of engine management/tune is definitely needed as I do want to run some higher boost.

Whenever you shift you can point your hand out of your car window and act like it's a laser!  People will get so scared or you'll look crazy.

Speed density just came out for the stock evo ecu, but I don't really see an advantage for that yet.

Your turbo spool a little faster, you pick up some few hp, you can then run hks bov without issues, you can still drive your car if a there's boost leak or let's say an intercooler pipe comes lose. ( meaning you will still be able to drive the car to a stock location after discovering the problem ) Plus it looks cool lol
